Moving, Packing and Storage Tips by Bekins/ITS Relocation Portland
Moving Refrigerators/Freezers
Defrost and thoroughly dry your refrigerator and freezer before moving day. This
is very important. The doors should be left open several hours to air
after defrosting. All loose pans and trays should be removed and packed. Regular
shelves can be left in place. Empty the drain pan. If there is
an icemaker, it must be serviced by a third party. We can arrange this
for you at an additional charge.
Moving Washers
Unscrew water connectors for your washer or have a serviceman do this. Roll
the hoses, wrap and place inside the washer. Be very careful to check
for leaks to your plumbing. A washer pack can be purchased to stabilize
the washer tub from movement.
Moving Dryers
Detach electric dryer hose from wall connection. Gas dryers must have
lines detached. Both services can be arranged for additional fees.
Mowers and Gas Powered Tools
Gas tanks should be drained and oil reservoirs emptied. No flammable
mixtures or articles may be transported on public carriers.
Rugs
Vacuum rugs and carpets. We will roll carpet to move it. Small
rugs can be rolled and secured with tape.
Sewing Machines
The sewing machine head should be removed from the cabinet and placed in the
carrying case or placed in a small carton. Loose items in the cabinet
drawers should be removed and packed.
Stoves/Ranges
Any electrical or gas lines must be serviced by a professional. We can
arrange this service for you. Removable parts should be packed.
Televisions
LCD, flat screens, plasma TV’s are best moved in their original boxes. Special
cartons can be purchased for TV screens less than 50 inches. LCD or
plasma TV’s with a screen size over 50 inches will be transported in
a custom built crate at an additional charge. Older big screen TV’s
and table model sets do not require special handling.
Cartons
Containers should be good, sturdy, clean, and sealed on all seams with tape. All
cartons must be sealed on top. Do not use garment bags or trash bags. Moving
cartons, tape, and other supplies are available for purchase from us at competitive
prices.
Wrapping Paper
It is best to pack your household goods in unprinted newsprint. We supply
unprinted newspaper for purchase.
Marking Cartons
A felt tip marker can be used to mark cartons with the appropriate room and
general comments to avoid confusion.
What Not To Pack
Do not pack any flammables, combustibles, explosives, or caustics. This
includes aerosol spray cans, paint thinner, gasoline, kerosene, bleach, ammunition,
batteries, motor oil, etc. These items may cause damage to other items
in your shipment and are not covered under the terms of our liability coverage.
Remove
All items that are directly screwed or otherwise attached to walls or cabinets cannot be removed by our personnel. These items may include under cabinet appliances, towel racks, etc.. We will arrange for a third party service to address this when requested.
Beds
Beds will be dismantled at the origin residence and reassembled at the destination
residence. Mattresses and box springs should be packed in a carton
for a long distance move or a move into storage. Poly bags are used
for local moves to protect against soilage. All of these supplies can
be purchased from our inventory.

Books should be packed in small, strong cartons and should be packed standing
upright using paper to separate. Recommended weight for all cartons
is not to exceed 40 pounds.

to hold clothes on hangers to avoid wrinkling. Wardrobe cartons are available
for local moves FREE of charge if emptied and returned on delivery day. Small
clothing items can be packed in cartons, suitcases, trunks, or left in dresser
drawers.

Pack canned food upright in small, strong cartons. Carton weight is best
handled under 40 pounds. Kitchen utensils should be wrapped and placed

wrapped and placed in a medium size carton, 2-3 to a box depending on size. Dispose
of food in open containers that might spill or spoil in route. Perishable
food should never be shipped. If your shipment is going to be stored,
dispose of any open food and check expiration dates. Silverware should
be wrapped and packed in a silver chest or carton. For dishes, glasses
and all breakables, use a sturdy walled carton such as a dishpack. All
items must be packed individually. Large plates and heavy items should
be placed in the bottom of the carton on edge. Place smaller items towards
the top. Ideally, there should be 2-3 inches of crushed paper to cushion
all sides of the carton (bottom, top and sides). We inventory these supplies
for your convenience.

shade with paper. Remove and wrap bulbs with wrapped lampshade. Lamp
bases should be wrapped and placed in a separate carton.
